Spotlight on Allerton waste incinerator proposals

A CONTROVERSIAL proposed waste incinerator will go before York councillors again tonight.

Campaigners against the scheme for Allerton Quarry have sent every member of York's planning committee details of their objections to the proposed waste incinerator in the Vale of York.

York Residents Against Incineration (YRAIN) want the councillors to formally oppose the scheme on planning grounds, although the council in its capacity as a waste collection authority, has already agreed to take part in the scheme, as have North Yorkshire County Council.

The planning committee will tonight and decide its response to a consultation by Harrogate Borough Council over the planning application it has received from Amey Cespa for the project.

The campaigners claim the scheme will hinder recycling efforts by the York council because its contract with Amey Cespa commits it to provide a minimum waste tonnage.

They also claim to make the scheme profitable, the private company will have to burn commercial waste, brought to the site on lorries.
