The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has been awarding carbon credits to incinerators and landfills, arguing that they reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These four case studies indicate that these projects are counterproductive: they increase greenhouse gas emissions, increase toxic emissions, reduce recycling and displace informal-sector recyclers who offer better alternatives.
